What is Dakini Mountain?

Established in 2019 by Pema Khandro Rinpoche and Ngakpa International, Dakini Mountain is a Buddhist pilgrimage site and retreat center devoted to cultivating compassion, wisdom, and luminous wellness of mind and body in a context that celebrates gender equality, diversity, and ecological sustainability.

Dakini is a Sanskrit term that means “sky-goer.” It refers to the principle of feminine enlightened energy that pervades the phenomenal world and is revealed in the least expected forms. Dakini Mountain embodies this naturally occurring wisdom, affirms the dignity and intrinsic goodness of all beings, and supports others in connecting with their innate wakefulness.

Pilgrimage Site

Dakini Mountain is the fulfillment of Pema Khandro’s vision for creating a Vajrayogini power center. Power centers are consecrated places charged by potent practices. They foster experiences of inspiration and higher awareness that can change a person’s life and change the course of the culture, country, and world. Vajrayogini represents the alternative power of altruistic love, so underrepresented in our time.

As a female Buddha who embodies innate wisdom, she is the ultimate symbol of gender inclusivity. Pilgrims can visit the Vajrayogini Stupa at Dakini Mountain, which houses the exquisite statue specially made and consecrated in Boudha, Nepal.

Retreat Center

Situated on 35 breathtakingly beautiful acres within the Tahoe National Forest, Dakini Mountain will host:

spiritual and meditation retreats
programs to support detoxification and radiant health
some of Ngakpa International’s premier courses
and other groups seeking a refuge for deep relaxation in nature and a pristine setting for tuning into inner wisdom

The site includes a lodge, large meadow, pond, walking trails, and more. The next phase of development will focus on building lodging for teachers and participants, upgrading the solar energy system, and adding other needed infrastructure.
